Fire rated door closers are mandatory for fire doors in most commercial, industrial and multi-occupancy residential buildings. Their purpose is to automatically close doors to prevent the spread of smoke and fire throughout a building.

Fire rated concealed door closers
Fire rated concealed door closers offer an alternative to traditional overhead, surface-mounted door closers. Fire rated concealed door closers are installed in the door and door frame, making them invisible when the door is closed.
Samuel Heath has been a leading name in fire rated concealed door closer technology for over fifty years. Our concealed door closer products meet all relevant fire performance standards.
We have developed fire rated concealed door closer products that are now installed across the world to overcome the limitations of traditional overhead door closers.
Benefits of fire rated concealed door closers
Here are some of the benefits of fire rated concealed door closers:
- Personal safety
Overhead fire rated door closers present a ligature risk. In mental health and other medical facilities, or social housing, this is a significant risk to personal safety. Being hidden away within the mechanics of the door, fire rated concealed door closers don’t offer the same means for self-harm.
- Vandalism and damage
Unfortunately, some residents of multi-occupancy buildings don’t like having doors that automatically close, and will take matters into their own hands to stop them doing so. They can easily damage an overhead door closer for this or any other reason. It is very difficult to vandalise or damage fire rated concealed door closers because they are tucked away. An element of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ is also key.
- Non-institutional
Overhead fire rated door closers are associated with institutional settings. This makes it difficult to create homely spaces in care homes, social housing and medical facilities. When fire rated door closers are concealed, a cosy environment can be created which is known to improve wellbeing and recovery.
- More hygienic
Concealed fire rated door closers are more hygienic than overhead door closers because they are not exposed. They don’t provide a surface to collect the same level of bacteria and detritus. Particularly in buildings of people with health conditions, this is particularly important. They are also positioned much lower, so can be easily inspected and cleaned.
